Brand Guidelines - Do's and Don'ts

Legibility for all audiences: clean and simple design

Before creating print materials it is recommended that you read through the following do's and dont's. This list is not intended to be exhaustive.

Dont's
Do's
Use coloured paper
Use 'clean' white paper so all copy can be read easily.
Spreading big boxes of colour across the material
Boxes of colour can be used, but sparingly within the same material. It is used for impact and effect.

Too many can be confusing and the reader is drawn to these devices rather than
the actual content.
Do not use tints or duotones
Use solid colours from the secondary palette. They were selected for their specfic feel and to work together.

By creating tints we end up diluting the effect. Pictures that have duotones can cause confusion.
No text over busy backgrounds, images or watermarks

Dont's
Why not?

Use key lines

A key line would generally be put around an image or a colour block of text.

Adding a key line would make the content busier and hinder the impact of the image and content.

Sentence case
WORRIED ABOUT YOUR MEMORY? should be: Worried about your memory?

Full capitals are more difficult to read.

Use text in italics
Italics may be difficult for people who are visually impaired to read.

Avoid using unless special circumstances.

Right align text
Always left align text as it is easier to read and traditionally that is the way people read text. Visually it is less cluttered and prevents confusion.
